We got our first bit of real snow in the area these past few days and sure enough the roadways are filled with accidents… it’s like these people can’t remember a whole year ago when they were faced with similar driving conditions… maybe they got in wrecks last year too. When people think of Colorado in the winter I’d imagine it’s easy to invision snow capped mountains and cold snowy weather–and they’d be right about certain parts of the state and certainly the mountain towns, but the majority of Colorado and certainly the vast Denver Metro area really has pretty calm weather year-round. It only really snows a couple times a season, and these last few days was our first of this season.

I stayed home, called in to work, didn’t do anything–well beat a video game actually, stared out the window from time to time and generally was a pile. Meanwhile traffic reports of slow moving parking lots along the main roads, scattered with spin-outs and fender benders, rolled in. My dogs played in the snow chasing each other all about and kicking up snow, my younger dog being this his first winter and experience with the white stuff was fun to watch. He’s a sheepdog with tons of hair so he seems built for this type of weather. Had we had more food around the house I might’ve feasted, but our supplies were low and I wasn’t about to go anywhere, so I ate and snacked at random. Had I had any forethought into calling in to work I might’ve been up the mountains myself, seeking even more frozen water crystals to slice and carve my board into, but my decision to stay in didn’t come until the wee hours of the morning and I opted out of the outside world alltogether.

First snow. First snowday. I’ll never live anywhere that doesn’t have snow, at least part of the year.

Most definately not alone

I’ve often been fascinated by the possibility of extraterestrial life, ufos, and that sort of thing. I found this great video on google video that is a couple years old. Back in the early 90s when NASA was conducting space flights they beamed all the video imagry they were capturing back to earth… and if you tuned into the right channel you got to see, and could record, live unedited NASA space footage. Well, some dude named Martin Stubbs recorded about 400 hours worth of this footage and got some amazing shots. The following video takes what was released in this original video and breaks down the science behind it all exquisitly. I should note that this is a fairly dry science driven documentary. In no way does it come off as a “conspiracy theory” or anything of the like. There’s commentary by top NASA engineers and scientists as well as objective views for every shot they analyze. It’s extremely fascinating and well worth the watch; at least I couldn’t turn away. Plus the foreward is by Dan Ackroyd so you know it’s legit.

UPDATE: I know it’s long, but it’s definately worth every minute. Despite it’s dry, often repetitive approach, and even using a chalkboard (who uses chalkboards? whiteboard it! or, M.I.T. board it) I found this to be the most gripping footage I’ve ever seen. Apparently there’s a DVD too, filled with Amazon user reviews if you want to read others opinions. NOW WATCH!

P.S. The Roswell Crash: Startling New Evidence which is hosted by Bryant Gumbel, is quite interesting as well. If you can catch it on the SciFi Channel, History Channel, or the Discovery Channel I highly recommend you check it out/TiVo it. Available as a DVD on Amazon as well. No where near as compelling as the footage above however.

Mythbuster’s Fire Fart

I should be posting about all the PS3 and Wii hysteria and the strange ebay listings… but I’m not.

Instead, since I’m a big MythBuster’s fan, I bring you this banned episode where they answer a question that has plagued man for centuries: Can you start a fart on fire?

Drunk Decision Making FTW

So apparently this dude, Justin Rabbit, was downtown and drunk and when asked to go home by a police officer he decided it’d be better to walk over to a parking lot with a running Ford F-350, steal it, and smash it into a couple of police cruisers and eventually the jail.

I totally agree.

2 Birds, 1 Flavored Stone

The ring necked pheasant being the South Dakota state bird and all my family and I have been known to bring these feathered beasts down (be it pheasant, quail, or goose) from time to time in season. While we may prefer a bucket of KFC to game bird we do our best to prepare the kill in some type of edible fashion. Well, apparently spitting out steel shot in satisfying pings as they stike your plate at the dinner table is a thing of the past. It’s all thanks to www.seasonshot.com and their seasoned shotgun shells. That’s right, the shot contained in these shells comes in cajun, lemon pepper, garlic, teriyaki, and honey mustard. No need to further prepare or season the bird since the flavor has already been deathfullly injected at 2000 feet per second and embedded deep within the bird. Imagine if Cheney had been packing these when he shot his friend… he probably could’ve licked his wounds clean and washed ‘em down with a nice red wine.
